What is Blocking?

This is an exercise that a director does with the actors before rehearsing or shooting scene. The purpose is to choreograph the movement of the actors and determine exactly where/when they need to situate themselves within a scene. There is no dialogue, no acting, just movement.

Apart from the writing, for me this is the most important part of the creative process. It is necessary to know the space very intimately before blocking and to especially understand the light. The space will sometime dictate how you are able to frame a shot and the rhythm and tempo (physical & voice) of the actors within that space needs to be like a dance, which is carried from shot to shot. Inevitably you end up dreaming of the scene and the film is shot in your daydreams and just before you fall asleep.
